Flipped Serendipity

finding peace

I like my coffee light
with a distinct flavor of the roast,
the hint of nut and cocoa wafting
with the aroma of the earth
and mellowed by milk.

I take it in ice
until it melts and loses all
that makes it coffee.
So sometimes I get it hot
because when it cools down,
it doesn’t lose its charm.

I add syrups and sugars too
because even as much as I like coffee,
the bitter acidic embrace on my tongue
makes me shrink back and turn away.

Love truly is blind.

Day Sixteen Prompt: to write a poem in which you closely describe an object or place, and then end with a much more abstract line that doesn’t seemingly have anything to do with that object or place, but which, of course, really does. The “surprise” ending to this James Wright poem is a good illustration of the effect we’re hoping you’ll achieve. An abstract, philosophical kind of statement closing out a poem that is otherwise intensely focused on physical, sensory details.
